Holstein Flowers is, just like SchermNed, a family business that has been cultivating gerberas since 1974. With 2 locations in De Lier which are covering nearly 11 hectares together, they are one of the largest gerbera growers in the world. Holstein Flowers has chosen the SchermNed insect netting filter system to protect their gerbera cultivation in an environmentally friendly manner.

 

Why the SchermNed insect netting filter system?

As the use of chemical pesticides is decreasing, Hans van Holstein was looking for another way to keep insects out. Hans explains why they chose the insect netting filter at Holstein Flowers: "We mainly struggle with moths laying eggs. The caterpillars that hatch from them create holes in the leaves. We want to keep those moths out."

Explaining why they didn't chose for the harmonica netting system, Hans further explains: "The insect netting filter hangs inward, so it becomes less humid due to the weather compared to the harmonica system." He expects that this will keep the mesh cleaner and that it's better for climate control in the greenhouse.

 

 

Holstein Flowers helps with the installation

During the quiet period between cultivation cycles, Holstein Flowers can deploy their own technical staff for part of the installation of the insect netting. Out of the over 2400 ventilation windows where the insect netting system is installed, their staff handles 800.

With clear explanations, proper guidance, and supervision from project leader Gerard van den Bos, they were able to start work, and the installation of the insect netting filter system proceeds very smoothly.
